Abia State Government Flags Off Fumigation Exercise In Govt Offices And Open Spaces

The State ministry of Environment has flagged off the fumigation of government offices and open spaces to get rid of rodents and other dangerous ants including mosquitoes and snakes.

According to a release by the Deputy Director of information, Ministry of Environment, Obioma Chidinma, the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Ogbonna while performing the flag off ceremony at the ministry, said the exercise is part of Governor Alex Otti's vision to keep the environment safe, adding that after government offices, the ministry will focus on open spaces and gutters, which he noted will help mitigate the spread of diseases and cholera ravaging some parts of Nigeria.

The release further stated that each fumigation lasts for six months and advised local government mayors and community leaders to replicate the same in their communities.

According to the release, the director of pollution control and environmental health, Mr Godson Aharanya who is leading the team of fumigators, stated that the aim of the exercise is to eliminate all insects that are of medical importance and revealed that the chemicals in use are environmentally friendly .

The release also warned people to wash their fruits, hands before eating, and to stop open defecation to help prevent cholera in Abia State.
