Olympics: Sports Minister Calls For Reforms In Sports Administration

Nigeria's Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has advocated for reforms to boost the effectiveness of sports federations in Nigeria.

Following Nigeria's lackluster showing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Enoh made this call on his official account. Reports indicate that despite substantial financial investment, Team Nigeria failed to secure any medals. Recall that President Bola Tinubu had authorized N12 billion for Nigeria's participation in the Paris Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Responding to these developments, the minister stated that reforms are necessary to avoid future unfortunate incidents like the Paris Olympic performance.

He said, "Upon returning home, we must take immediate action to prevent such [Paris Olympic] disappointments in the future. If reviewing the election process for our sporting federations is required to achieve this, then it will be done.

The elections for the federations are imminent, and they will provide an excellent opportunity to select the most capable individuals to lead the various sports federations.

Team Nigeria's poor performance at the Olympics is a result of many underlying issues that require immediate attention. I'm aware that the elections for sports federations in Nigeria can be tougher than our national elections. We must set our standards for scrutinizing what drives those vying to lead the federations and select only the best candidates.

"This call for reform seeks to improve the leadership and effectiveness of Nigeria's sports federations, paving the way for better global performance."
