ABSACA Conducts 3 Days Training For Secondary School Teachers On Family Life And HIV Education. (FLHE)
The Director General of the State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (ABSACA) Dr. Uloaku Emma-Ukaegbu has charged the Secondary school teachers to ensure effective implementation of Family Life And HIV Education FLHE in the Education Curriculum in all relevant subjects.
During a 3 days training at Gado hotel organized by ABIASACA with the support of the State government, Dr Emma - Ukaegbu lauded the maximum support of The Executive Governor of the State Dr. Alex Otti by funding all ABSACA activities in the fight to achieve zero new infection of HIV in the State.
The DG, who emphasized that HIV response should be a collaborative, multi-sectoral effort; collaborated with the state Ministry of Education to train the secondary school teachers with the aim to streamline Life skills , HIV prevention, Adolescent Reproductive and sexual health into the existing secondary schools secondary school health education curriculum.
She said certain subjects such as Home Economics, Basic sciences, National values and Biology were identified as veritable subject areas to help the state pass these messages to our school children.
“It is an innovative and reliable strategy to reinforce what the children may have learnt at home by teaching them these things early enough and by their teachers who they trust and believe.”
In a release by the Public relations officer ABSACA, Obioma Chidinma, obtained by our correspondent, in the first batch of training, sixty teachers were randomly selected from the three senatorial zones of the state who will in turn go back to the schools to step down to other teachers in their schools and zones.
In order to achieve the expected outcome, seasoned professionals were selected as the facilitators; Dr Elvire Chinedu, Dr Uloaku Emma-Ukaegbu, Mrs Ekeoma Akidi and Mr Chiukpai who took the participants through the module with topics such as Adolescent lifestyle and sexual behaviour, basic facts about HIV/AIDs, Drug abuse and trafficking, relationships and friendship, personal skills, values and value clarification, Basic facts on STIs to mention but a few.
The highlights of the interactive training were group work discussions, feedback sessions which helped to identify strengths, opportunities, gaps, drawbacks, and strategies for effective implementation of FLHE that will achieve the desired impact.
